Department of Physics is one of the four Science Departments that was launched when the University of Gondar was established in 2003. Department started its BSc Program in Applied Physics with 4 staffs (3 lecturers and 1 technical assistant) and more than 50 students in September 2004. The Department was a pioneer in the Ethiopia’s Physics Undergraduate Program: (1) by introducing Applied Physics Program (with track areas in Geophysics, Medical Physics and Optical-electronics) and (2) Integrating Computational Physics Courses and strong Experimental Physics supported with advanced Electronics and Measurement Systems Courses. It had also established Undergraduate Computational Physics and Electronics Simulation Lab to support the relevant courses with lab practices.
The Department started its Summer Undergraduate Program in 2009 and its Postgraduate Program was launched in 2012 with specializations in Medical Physics, Geophysics and Nuclear Physics. The Department’s current enrollment has grown to more than 300 students (including Postgraduate and summer students) and with academic staff of more than 30.
